Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a colorless gas, heavier than air, with a boiling point of –56°C and a freezing point of –78°C. It extinguishes fire through both cooling and smothering effects. CO₂ displaces the oxygen that the fire depends on and forms a “blanket” over the flames.

CO₂ extinguishers provide a completely clean extinguishing process with no need for cleanup afterward, making them ideal for use on fires involving electrical equipment, server rooms, and similar environments. They are also suitable for public spaces such as hospitals, or for areas requiring aluminum cylinders due to external conditions—such as marine environments or coastal installations. Carbon dioxide extinguishers can also be used on flammable liquid fires.
